Steel strand pelletization is a mature technology. In addition to some advances in metallurgy and design, the process is basically the same as 50 years ago for the sake of safety and customer convenience. One of my mentors once described the process as "a winch with a mower behind it". Although this assessment is correct to some extent, it is not a convenient fact to use as an excuse for not improving the production workshop.

Considering its function, it is very simple to design a strip granulator. A pair of feed rollers pull the strand out of the extrusion die, then transfer the strand to the helical rotary knife and cut it on a fixed anvil called a lathe knife. Whether it's processing one stock at the rate of 10 pounds per hour or 200 shares at the rate of 20,000 pounds per hour, the process is the same. Perhaps it is this simplicity that masks the true nature of the extrusion line.

As far as the relationship between granulator and extrusion line is concerned, the long-term challenge facing granulator is: "You give me a good strand, and I will also give you a good strand." "Granulators are not magical machines; they do not produce good balls from a bad chain or from a chain that has not been properly adjusted or transported. In fact, it does not matter whether the rotor is sharp or dull, whether the roll is new or worn, or whether the bearing is good or bad. These machines will make them at an amazing speed.

Historically, many technologies have been applied to extruders and upstream conveyor components. You just need to read a magazine like this to see a wide range of products offered in gun barrel and screw technology (single and double barrels) and temperature control, and appreciate all the projects devoted to these systems.

Similarly, the design of granulator and downstream components is reliable, and in many cases, they can work normally under very unfavorable conditions. Building materials and surface improvements have prolonged the service life of equipment and largely redefined the duration of sustained operations. In order to improve the operation experience of the machine, we have carefully considered the security, ease of use and serviceability.

Although these two dynamics (extruder/upstream and pelletizer/downstream) have received considerable attention and engineering focus, what happens between the equipment and the two systems seems to be largely ignored. From the extrusion die to the feeding table of the granulator, it seems to an inadvertent observer that the common practice is to "immerse it in some water and see what happens".

California's Recycling Department recently approved recipients of its 2008-19 Recycled Fiber, Plastics and Glass Funding Program. The goal of all five winners is to use the money to buy a certain amount of plastic.

According to calrecycling documents, the project uses state funds to support the expansion of recycling infrastructure. In the latest round of appropriations, 14 applications were received and assessed.

The following are details of five enterprises that received grant funds.

FDS Manufacturing: The Pomona, California-based food and agricultural packaging manufacturer was selected for a $3 million contract to buy a melt filter, granulator and extruder that can process an additional 2,000 tons of polypropylene and polyethylene annually. The resulting recycled plastics will be used to make corner boards, boxes, pallets and other products. FDS also has a factory in Fowler, California.

Prospect Plastics: The recycling company is based in Redsville, North Carolina, but has a factory in Chino, California. The company will receive $2.9 million to install equipment to produce purified food-grade high-density polyethylene (HDPE) from consumer containers and agricultural films.

"The project will create a high-value recyclable plastic material that can be used to make goods and products manufactured in California and throughout the country," Calrecycling wrote. The project estimates that 3,480 tons of containers and membranes will be transferred from landfills each year.

Roplast Industries: The bag manufacturer in Oroville, California, won a $2.5 million bonus to develop a new deinking system that allows the company to recycle more than 2,500 tons of LDPE a year, which will be used to produce retail and reusable grocery bags. The deinking system is manufactured by Cadel Deinking Company of Spain. In early 2017, Plastic Recycling Update published articles on the company and its technology at APR Technical Forum. Kader is also a finalist in the FlexPack Recovery Challenge because its technology can be used to separate different polymers in flexible multi-material packaging.

Netafim: Irrigation Products Inc. will receive $2 million to expand recycled HDPE agricultural irrigation pipes. It will collect used tubing and deliver the material to the company's recovery facility, where the tubing will be crushed, cleaned and treated.
